The Old Man and the Sea (2022 Reprint)
Ernest Hemingway (1899 -1961) was an American novelist, short story writer, and journalist. He fought in World War I, and later became known for “The Lost Generation”, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for his novel The Old Man and the Sea, and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.
Hemingway left a deep impression on readers through the “iceberg” principle, his writing style is described by being economical with words but having many layers of meaning, one must think deeply to fully understand what is sent. Many of his works are now considered classics of the American Literature Publishing House: The Old Man and the Sea, For Whom the Bell Tolls, A Farewell to Arms, The Brief Happiness of MacCombe, The Endless Summer Festival, etc.
The Old Man and the Sea, one of Hemingway’s most famous works, uses the principle of “iceberg” when telling the story of a swordfish hunt for the old fisherman Santiago, who struggled for three days on the Great Well when he caught it. On the third day, he used a spear to kill the fish, forced it into the sailboat and returned home, but the sharks had come to fight, he used all his reproductive strength to fight the sharks, throwing spears, even rowing to fight. He killed many, making them go away, but in the end when he looked at his swordfish, all the flesh had been pecked away, leaving only a skeleton. The work is an epic poem praising human labor and hope.
